Build Something Better

The last few days have been a lot.

I grieve with those who seek and hope for more from humanity.

I grieve with all who are still grieving today.

I also, respectfully, stand by my actions. I will not engage in a socio-politically motivated game or a demand for polarization, nor will I make to shout the loudest to try to change minds that don't want to be changed.

However, that being said, I do have one, somewhat radical, thought to offer…

Regardless of your opinion on Roe v. Wade, one thing we can all agree on is that it was not perfect. There were many problems, many loopholes - the sources of many issues that have come up with it over the years.

While recent events now present many problems of their own, there is one major factor that everyone seems to be overlooking…

This is our chance to build something BETTER.

I generally avoid engaging in politics because it never seems to be about what is best for us, it always seems to be what is best for an agenda. And that’s true on either side of the aisle. But my heart wants this particular change so badly that I’m breaking my rule simply to start floating a new idea. One that I have yet to hear from anyone…

Instead of trying to reinstate what was, or heaven forbid leave it to the states to decide, why not introduce NEW legislation that protects ALL of us. A new movement of Bodily Autonomy for everyone. Something that protects everyone including those with a uterus, those in transition, those who have suffered at the hands of an attacker, those who find themselves at the end of their life or in tremendous suffering, etc. Whatever the reason, we have all had cause to advocate for ourselves. We have all had to fight against someone telling us what to do with our own bodies.

This could be a way for us to finally be able to maintain sovereignty over the very body we inhabit.

Not to mention it would allow medicine, mental health professionals, and holistic work to save as many lives as they can without worrying about whether or not they’re going to go to jail for it, or if they’re stepping on someone else’s rights in order to do so.

What could be more aligned with “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” than that?

I’m not saying it would be perfect. I’m sure there will be many wrinkles to iron out in the process. And I’m sure it isn’t going to happen overnight. But this… THIS… is the thing we've actually been wanting. This is what we’ve been yearning for. Yelling for.

This is the thing that truly needs to be changed.

A week from now, we’re going to be celebrating our country’s independence. What better way to do so than in calling for our own.

Instead of trading vitriol on a social media post, directed at people who refuse to hear you anyway; instead of engaging in the same arguments that have kept us running in that same hamster wheel for decades… turn your hearts and voices to something new. Something healing. Something that can truly change all of our lives for the better.

Of course, our hands and hearts are not open to receive if we are still clinging to old beliefs, old habits, and old paradigms.

So maybe now, it’s time to let go.

Maybe it’s time to release the outdated, barely-protective rulings of the past…

And start marching for the bodily freedom that EVERYONE deserves.
